Katanin p80 WD40 repeat-containing subunit B1 homologue of 823 aas and 2 TMSs (N-terminal).  May participate in a complex which severs microtubules in an ATP-dependent manner. Microtubule severing may promote rapid reorganization of cellular microtubule arrays. This protein has at least 4 repeats of about 42 aass (WD40).  The protein is an AAA ATPase which targets centrosomes (Hartman et al. 1998). p80 katanin is targeted to spindle poles through a combination of direct microtubule binding by the p60 subunit and through interactions between the WD40 domain and an unknown protein (McNally et al. 2000).
