(- 8?) TMSs. Deletion of MME1 significantly increased steady-state
mitochondrial Mg2+ concentrations, while overexpression decreased them. Measurements of Mg2+ exit from proteoliposomes reconstituted with purified Mme1 provided
definite evidence that Mme1 is an Mg2+ exporter (Cui et al. 2015). The G-M-N motif determines ion selectivity, probably together with
the negatively charged loop at the entrance of the channel, thereby
forming the selectivity filter (Sponder et al. 2013).
