3.A.1.140.8 FtsEX of Bacillus subtilis where FtsE is an ATPase of 228 aas (O34814) and FtsX is a dimeric membrane protein of 296 aas and 4 TMSs in a 1 + 3 TMS arrangement (O34876). It is an ABC transporter secondarily involved in sporulation. It was initially thought to act as an importer and/or exporter,
possibly at the top of a hierarchical cascade leading to the correct
temporal initiation of sporulation, upstream of the histidine
kinases KinA, KinB and KinC, the RapA phosphatase and the Spo0A
sporulation protein (Garti-Levi et al. 2008). However, it may be involved in peptidoglycan (cell wall) remodeling together with the autolysin CwlO for which it is an activator (Rismondo and Schulz 2021).
