9.B.65 The Putative Transporter (YhgE) Family

E. coli YhgE is a putative transporter of 574 aas with 11 putative TMSs and a C-terminal hydrophilic domain of nearly 200 residues. It belongs to the DUF4153 family.  Homologues are of about 410-620 residues in length, and are from bacteria. None is functionally characterized. One of these proteins is 1825 aas long with 16 TMSs in a 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 TMS arrangement.  Some members of this family are called pentapeptide repeat-containing proteins (PPRPs), but this motif is characteristic of a hydrophilic domain and seems not to be characteristic of all members of the family.
