1.A.64.2.2 Myelin and lymphocyte protein, MAL, of 153 aas and 4 TMSs. This human ortholog is 88% identical to the dog protein, TC# 1.A.64.2.1. It may be a component in vesicular
trafficking cycling between the Golgi complex and the apical plasma
membrane, and could be involved in myelin biogenesis and/or myelin function. It (1) has lipid-like properties that qualify it as a member of the group of proteolipid proteins. (2) it partitions selectively into detergent-insoluble membranes, consistent with MAL being distributed in highly ordered membranes in the cell. The structure, expression and biochemical characteristics of MAL, the association of MAL with raft membranes and the function of MAL in polarized epithelial cells have been discussed (Rubio-Ramos et al. 2021).
