The MrpA, MrpB, and MrpD subunits contain membrane-embedded and essential acidic residues (Kajiyama et al. 2009). Several residues important for Na+/H+ antiport activity, sodium exclusion, individual Mrp protein levels, or Mrp complex formation have been identified (Morino et al., 2010).
